Magician & Pro Traveler Doug McKenzie’s One-Bag Philosophy
Doug McKenzie is an internationally recognized magician and mentalist who spends most weeks on the road traveling with just one bag. With a career built on precision, preparation, and performance, he approaches travel the same way he approaches his craft: streamlined, intentional, and always ready to move.
From weekly cross-country flights between New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to international trips with quick turnarounds, years of constant travel have shaped a system built around efficiency, organization, and living well on the road.
Pakt: How often are you traveling for work?
Doug: I travel every week. This month alone includes two trips to Las Vegas, two trips to San Francisco, and trips to Los Angeles and Saint-Tropez, with quick turnarounds at home in New York City to recharge.
Pakt: Where is one of the most unexpected places that your work has taken you?
Doug: I've shared magic in all sorts of places, from the Arctic Circle to the favelas of Brazil, the backstreets of India, and private mega yachts in the Mediterranean. It's one of the few art forms that doesn't need translation. You can make a coin vanish anywhere in the world, and the person watching still gets it.
David Blaine and I recently went to the Hillbrow neighborhood in Johannesburg, despite all the warnings about how much danger we would be putting ourselves in. What I've found is that when you have something genuine to share, especially something like magic, people appreciate that. In that moment, all the fear and tension we’d been warned about disappeared. That was the real magic.
Pakt: You’re known for traveling with a one-bag set up. Why is packing light so important to you?
Doug: Packing light started out of necessity. I was constantly packing and unpacking, which forced me to become ruthless about what I actually needed. Over time, it turned into something closer to an obsession. In the same way that I’m constantly refining my magic, that mindset gradually extended to other parts of my life. If something does the same job better while taking up less space, I'll switch to it. I've replaced the same items multiple times over the years, each version a little better, smaller, or lighter than the last.
Based on the suitcases I see, I think most people pack for every possibility. I pack for the trip I'm taking. I know what I’ll need and what I won't, and everything has a place. It sounds rigid, but it's actually what gives me the freedom to move quickly, skip checked bags, and know exactly where everything is.
Pakt: You describe yourself as a minimalist performer. What makes that exciting to those that you perform for?
Doug: I’ve never liked magic that required a lot of equipment or props. It always felt like the prop itself was doing the work, and that became the explanation for how the magic happened. I spend my days honing the skills, timing, and psychology involved in performing magic and mentalism. It’s me that’s creating the magic, not the object being used.
When you strip everything back and create magic out of seemingly nothing, it feels much more powerful and real. I think that’s exciting for people because it feels impossible in a very different way. There’s nothing to hide behind. It also means I can perform anytime and anywhere, and I truly enjoy having that freedom and spontaneity.
Pakt: Have you ever had to get to a destination in an unconventional way?
Doug: My business partner, Ryan Oakes, and I have a tech magic show called “Digital Deception.” We once had two shows booked back-to-back in Florida, with only about an hour between them. The second event happened to be running a helicopter golf ball drop, so the organizer sent the helicopter to pick us up and fly us directly to the show.
We landed on the lawn in front of an already seated audience, jumped out of the helicopter, stepped on stage, and started the show. I wish all of my appearances were like that.
